Research and Development

At Hesselberg Hydro we pride ourselves on our innovative approach to solving specific problems, and on our commitment to extending the knowledge base on materials behaviour and construction techniques.

We have research and development facilities both in the UK and in Holland, together with a mobile laboratory for on-site use. For underwater applications, we have a test pond in Holland which can be emptied to enable assessment of placing techniques and materials.

Research and Development Projects

Our patented product, Marine Mastic Granules was developed in our Sheffield laboratory. Full scale trials with a small test-mixer followed in Holland.

At Megget Reservoir, we carried out grouting trials preparatory to the upgrading of the rip-rap upstream face:

• Concern was expressed over the effectiveness of the works on the upper areas - might it be reduced in time by mastic creeping down the slope?
• To ensure confidence in the product, a test box was devised to assess the effect of elevated temperatures on the construction over several months. The trial showed movement to be restricted to the top few millimetres of mastic only.
