Replacement of underwater hardstanding, Baglan Bay, Port Talbot
Tankers up to 6,000 tonnes regularly delivered raw materials to the jetty at BP Chemicals' Port Talbot works. Destruction of existing hardstanding by propeller scour had lead to a bed-profile insufficiently regular for the tankers. The large tidal range meant ships resting on the hardstanding during low tide.
A robust solution was sought that could be installed underwater, and between weekly deliveries throughout the year.
- Existing construction replaced by layer of clean rock (50m x 15m x 300mm )
- Rock placed using laser guided plant
- Rock grouted to fill all voids with mastic
- Accurate, rapid placement of mastic from specially designed skips avoided disruption to deliveries
- A level, flexible, scour resistant hardstanding was produced
