Fordingbridge Flood Alleviation Scheme, New Forest, Hampshire
During extreme rainfall events the village Fordingbridge was regularly flooded. Halcrow, working for the Environment Agency, designed a scheme which included a diversion channel which takes water from Ashford Water, a tributary of the River Avon, and diverts it back to the Avon downstream of the village.
When required, water flows over a lowered section of riverbank along Ashford Water, down the riverbank slope and into the diversion channel.
Open Stone Asphalt placed on geotextile was used to provide erosion protection to the riverbank slope and was also used adjacent to culvert structures along the channel.
